How do you draw a line between THE FEAR and THE PRECAUTION?

How do you draw a line between THE FEAR and THE PRECAUTION?
Especially if you're in media!
This cartoon wasn't published as few journalists thought it could be offending as I had shown Manmohan Singh as a woman with bindi and saree! They asked me to remove the bindi and saree and make him a MAN again. But I knew if I made those changes I would've lost the humour! So finally some other cartoon went instead of this.

Aren't we getting too panicky? A hostile crowd/group can find offence in any visual, any word, any crusade. Why do we have to compromise on our 'disciplined freedom' in the name of constraint? Cartoonists all over the World use personalities/celebrities to represent a situation and carry their opinion.

What do you think about this cartoon? Is it offending to Sikh community or to Congress party?
Please send me your comment on cartoonistsatish@gmail.com
or you can leave your comment on the blog also.
This will surely help me to fine-tune my freedom and grow as a better cartoonist!

ey,,According to me there is no offence here..The cartoon will be meaningful if he's shown as woman only...Infact if the ppl want to see it as offending..even if he pictured as man it can be taken in other sense :)..Good creativity and keep doing good work..

Hey Satish,
I think this is exactly whats happening over there (ref. your cartoon)..LOL...
Anyway Indian Media, Politicians and other forces are yet to update themselves and get literate to appreciate this kind of sarcasm. Hope that happens soon...they should look at New York Times cartoons...
Keep up the good work...and anyways now we have blogs to say what we feel..

i dnt think it is offending in any manner. not to any community in ANY MANNER...it is just how things get blown out of proportion.

Your cartoon is very appropriate. It depicts Manmohan Singh in just the way he is- spineless, meek and unfaithful to the Left.

You never know what people would feel bad about these days... I def. dont think it is offensive, but somehow it looks like the kind of cartoon that may have some people trying to play safe (avoid a few broken windows to their offices)

About the depiction, I completely agree, removing the bindi and sari would strip the strip of its soul, and it would be better not published - than published in that truncated form.

But this definitely hits the point perfectly, amazing depiction

Satish, I would say that this is too innovative and a very creative way to explain a long short story. I also do not see any harm in showing Manmohan Singh in bindi and saree. Everyone has their own viewpoint and running away from being bold enough is a cowardly act. You are doing a great job... Keep it up and keep continuing.

why should a cartoonist fear or think about some negative comments against a cartoon. i personally believe that a cartoon is the reflection of the truth behind the truth in the mirror. a cartoonist is the representitive of the huge group of people thinking the same. some may oppose and my accuse the art, so what ? SO GO ON FRIEND.

Very nice piece of work.. But unfortunately people these days need an excuse to vent out their anger. Attacking media offices have become order of the day. So, it might be in the media company's interest to avoid controversies and play safe..

Hi satish...its really a good time to showcase the personalities and show them what they are and i dont think that you should remove the sari and bindi..every single citizen of this country has the rights to speak.

A great cartoon. I'm a Canadian and wondered if the cartoon would be considered offensive if it had been drawn by a westerner?

i wonder how people wud react if done the other way round. manmohan as the man and the others as women.

and i think people over here are a little too cautious. but then our society isnt open either.

Three cheers to all of you.
It's wonderful to see so many people respond and post their opinion. You all showed you care; you care for the freedom.

My intention was to initiate little debate and I'm glad to find few opinions who showed some concern about the growing intolerance. But at the end of the day, I'm sure the credibility and the freedom of a newspaper is more precious than the office windows, which could be broken by the goondas..

May be we all need to be educated to take opinion in the positive way. The debate will continue for ages, as it's an issue complicated by our diverse society, selfish & short-sighted politicians and uneducated faceless mob. And we'll protect our freedom. THE FREEDOM TO SAY!

SOME OPINIONS THAT REACHED MY MAILBOX:

I faced similar situations in my paper, when a I ask them why, they say .. you know this… you know that… and stuff, never had proper answer. i thought it happens to only people like me who is unknown and freelance cartoonists.

I think they rejected this cartoon...
personally he or she find that humour is not funny coz, they must be in the other side of the funny part.. in this case, he or she must be a sympathiser or in love with manmohan singh like me :) or he or she is spineless .

anyway, your caricature of manmohan singh is just superb.

Aaaaah !!!! Unanimously in support of the cartoon !!! I am not a cartoonist. I am just an admirer of those subtle intricacies and the funny one liners. Frankly, when I looked at the cartoon initially, I found it awkward and just as I was about to comment on the awkwardness, I was awestruck by the number of 'Ayes'. Personally, I have no problem with the cartoon. But taking into account the sentiments of people, I think it was wise not to have published the cartoon. Sorry Sathish !!! I didn't want to join in the crowd. That's my opinion.
